How this project codename generator works

A codename is disposable — it just needs to get a project through standups, branch names and Slack threads before marketing picks the real one. This generator picks a style first, then draws every word in the codename from that style's own vocabulary, the same approach as the video game name generator on the main page.

The eight styles

• Ops: military-flavoured operation names. Operation Silent Falcon, Steel Ledger.
• Stealth: quiet, invented single words — the Apple/Google internal-codename register. Nightjar, Project Halcyon.
• Field: adjective plus animal, spy-thriller shorthand. Copper Wolf, Quiet Osprey.
• Constellation: stars, orbits and drift. Project Orion, Zenithline.
• Mythic: Greek and Roman gods and epic epithets, the register real black-budget programs actually borrow from. Operation Prometheus, Project Sacred Atlas.
• Scientific: research-lab jargon — elements, particles, invented compounds. Project Helix, Quantum Cascade.
• Corporate: deliberately dull, hides in plain sight on a roadmap. Project Blue Harbor, Provisional Ledger.
• Wildcard: for teams who'd rather laugh than sound classified. Codename: Waffle, Operation Deeply Average Goose (Working Title).

Questions

Can I use a generated codename for my project?

Yes. Any project, commercial or not, no attribution. A codename is internal shorthand rather than the shipped name, so there's no need to trademark-check it the way you would a real product name — just make sure it isn't already in use somewhere inside your own org.

Does it use AI?

No. It's a small procedural generator running entirely in your browser, and it works offline once the page has loaded.

What makes a good project codename?

Short and easy to say in a standup, and unrelated enough to the real product that it won't accidentally telegraph the pitch to a stray screenshot or open tab. Two words beat three, and a word nobody can spell after hearing it once is a bad codename.
